A large state wildlife area following the Squannacook River through Shirley, Groton, and Townsend, about 1,306 acres in all. Informal trails and river access points draw fly fishers after stocked trout, along with birders and light hikers. It is a separate, much bigger property from the town's own twelve-acre Squannacook Conservation Area next door.
