Lake and Pond Beaches Near Boston

Most freshwater beaches near Boston belong to a town and are run for its own residents, which is the part nobody tells you before you drive out. Here are the ones anyone can walk into, the state parks that charge by the car, the town beaches that sell a day pass, and the resident-only ponds worth knowing if you live there.

Free, and open to anyone

No pass, no residency check, no parking fee. The short list.

  • Houghton's PondThe Blue Hills' main swim beach, with free lots ringing the pond. Beach open 10am to 6pm daily through Labor Day; lifeguards daily from June 15, weekends before that.
  • Shannon BeachDCR beach on the north shore of Upper Mystic Lake, free lot, lifeguarded Memorial Day to Labor Day. Closes after heavy rain and bacteria advisories.
  • Pearce Lake BeachBreakheart Reservation's freshwater beach, free lot on Forest Street, lifeguarded mid-June to Labor Day. Unsupervised outside that window.
  • Heart Pond BeachAbout 200 feet of sand, free lot, dawn to dusk. No lifeguard at any point in the season, so swimming is at your own risk.

State parks: pay per car, anyone can go

DCR charges by the vehicle, with a lower rate for Massachusetts plates. Walk or bike in and there's nothing to pay.

  • Walden Pond Main Beach$8 for MA plates, $30 out of state, card only. Lifeguards 10am to 6pm in season, and the reservation stops admitting cars when the lot is full.
  • Walden Pond Red Cross BeachThe quieter north-shore beach, reached on foot by the Pond Path. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day and unguarded.
  • Cochituate State Park Beach$8 a day for MA plates, $30 out of state, May 23 to October 12. Weekdays sunrise to sunset, weekends 8am to 7pm, and it fills on hot weekends.
  • Hopkinton Main BeachThe larger of the state park's two beaches, known locally as Lower Beach, lifeguarded late May to Labor Day. Lots open 8am to 8pm in summer.
  • Upper Reservoir BeachThe second, smaller beach, down a paved path from its own lot. Same season and hours, fewer people.

Town beaches that sell a day pass

Run by a town, but you can buy your way in for the day. Non-resident rates are usually higher, and lots are small.

  • Arlington ReservoirThe Res: a chlorinated, lifeguarded pond beach, open daily 9am to dusk, mid-June to late August. Parking comes with admission.
  • Crystal Lake BeachSpring-fed kettle pond with a city bathhouse at the Rogers Street end. Membership or day pass, swimming inside the ropes, and a daily deep-water test for kids who want the H-Dock.
  • White PondMembership or a day pass, 10am to 7pm daily, lifeguarded June 13 to August 14, 2026. Busy enough in summer that access is capped.
  • Morses Pond BeachSeason-pass system with kayak and paddleboard rentals. Lifeguards 10am to 5pm, June 22 to August 16, 2026; rangers stay to dusk and swimming after 5pm is at your own risk.
  • Memorial BeachFort Meadow Reservoir, free for Marlborough residents and $20 a day cash for everyone else. Swimming 11am to 6:45pm in season.
  • Centennial BeachThe Hudson side of the same reservoir. $10 a day residents, $20 non-residents, gates 6am to 9pm, staffed 9am to 7pm early June to late August.
  • Micozzi BeachNutting Lake, shallow and warm enough for small children, with courts and a playground. Paid parking in season, staffed roughly 10am to 6pm, mid-June to August 31.
  • Memorial BeachNatick's beach on Dug Pond, with a floating dock, a diving platform and a staffed slide. Season and day passes both sold, daily 10:30am to 6:30pm, no pets.
  • Town Beach at Silver LakeSmall lot that fills fast on hot weekends. Lifeguards in season only, and town postings disagree on whether they're on to 6pm or 8pm. No flotation devices.
  • Ames Long Pond Town BeachGuarded beachfront 10am to 5pm daily in season, with a swim dock. Day or season pass covers the lot.
  • The Old ReservoirThe Res: sandy beach and bathhouse, lifeguards June to August. No swimming when a guard isn't on duty, and no dogs on the beach in swim season.

Residents only

Worth knowing if you live in town, worth skipping if you don't.

  • Wrights PondMedford residents. Lifeguarded beach, bathhouse and concession stand, daily 10am to half an hour before sunset in summer.
  • Sunset LakeBraintree residents; a non-resident has to come with one. 10am to 7pm, swimming only while lifeguards are on duty.
  • Chilson BeachFranklin residents only, no visitor rate. Mid-June to mid-August, and under-14s need an adult on the beach.
  • Memorial Park BeachLake Massapoag, resident sticker or pass. Daily 9:30am to 6pm through the staffed season, roughly June 20 to August 16.
  • Sandy BeachHopkinton residents and their guests, $150 fine without a sticker. Staffed 10am to 5pm, weekends in late May and June, daily late June to late August.
  • Saxonville BeachFramingham residents, on the Framingham shore of Lake Cochituate. Lifeguarded roughly late June to mid-August; the beach itself is dawn to dusk.
  • Waushakum BeachFramingham residents, on Waushakum Pond. Dawn to dusk, no lifeguard on duty.
Beta Passes, fees and lifeguard dates come from town and agency pages and change year to year. Residency rules are the ones most likely to catch you out, so confirm on the beach's own page before you drive. Freshwater beaches here close for cyanobacteria as well as bacteria, usually after heavy rain. Updated 2026-09-13.
