Rock Harbor is a working fishing port at the Orleans-Eastham line, its channel marked by rows of pilings and lined with the charter fleet's docks. A small marshy beach sits beside the harbor mouth, better for watching the water and walking the tidal flats at low tide than for swimming, since boating and swimming are both barred from the channel itself.

Common questions
Is Rock Harbor in Orleans open today?
Open, no advisory on record in the latest MA DPH posting (updated 2026-07-16). MA DPH is the authority. Check the status the morning you go.
When's the best time to see the harbor and sunset?
Late afternoon into evening when a low tide lines up with sunset; the harbor faces west over Cape Cod Bay, and the free lot fills 90+ minutes before sunset on clear summer evenings.
Not in the working boat channel, where swimming and boating are both barred; the small beach next to it is more of a wading and flats-walking spot, with no lifeguard on duty.
Only a portable toilet has been reported seasonally near the harbor lot; there's no confirmed permanent restroom building.
Is there parking at Rock Harbor, and what does it cost?
Free lot (Free, no sticker required, by 1959 deed restriction). Rock Harbor lot (Rock Harbor Road)
What rules should I know at Rock Harbor?
Tidal range exceeds 10 feet in Cape Cod Bay; low tide exposes tidal flats extending hundreds of yards, nearly a mile at dead low - check tide times before walking out. No alcohol, no littering, no open fires; no dogs Friday before Memorial Day-Labor Day; no overnight camping/tents/trailers; 15 mph…
